Suspension built around your load, not a catalogue

A 4WD that tours is rarely the vehicle the factory sprung. Add a canopy or a drawer system, a fridge, water, a second battery, recovery gear, a bull bar and a winch up front, and the axle weights and the balance front-to-rear are both different.

That is why the first conversation is about weight, not brands. What lives in the vehicle permanently, what goes in for a trip, what your towball weight is when the van or trailer is hooked up, and how the driving splits between bitumen, gravel, corrugations and sand. From that we can pick spring rates and damping that work loaded and stay civilised when the vehicle is empty during the week.

Platforms we set up regularly

We work on the common Australian touring and work platforms — Toyota Hilux and LandCruiser (including 79, 200 and 300 series), Ford Ranger and Everest, Nissan Patrol and Navara, Isuzu D-Max and MU-X, Mitsubishi Triton and Pajero Sport, Mazda BT-50, VW Amarok, and American pickups such as Silverado and RAM.

Each platform has its own habits. Some are front-heavy before a bar is even fitted; some rear ends squat badly under towball weight; some independent front ends need caster correction as soon as they are lifted. Knowing the platform is half of getting the setup right the first time.

What a proper 4WD suspension job includes

Touring versus off-road versus work

UseWhat matters mostTypical setup direction
Long-distance touringComfort over corrugations, control at constant load, consistent damping over hoursSprings rated to real permanent load, damping tuned for compliance and fade resistance
Technical off-roadWheel travel, articulation, control on descentsTravel-focused setup with geometry corrected and bump-stop clearance checked
Work ute / tradeCarrying capacity, resistance to sag, longevity under daily loadLoad-rated rear springs or airbag assistance, heavier-duty bushes
Towing van or trailerRear squat, stability, headlight aim under towball weightRear load management — springs and/or airbags, with GVM considered

Most real vehicles fall between two of these, which is exactly why the setup gets chosen per vehicle rather than off a shelf.

Questions

Frequently asked

What suspension is best for towing a caravan?

For towing, the priority is controlling rear squat under towball weight without making the vehicle harsh when it is unhitched. That usually means rear springs rated for the towball weight you actually run, load-assist airbags, or a combination — and it is worth checking whether the loaded vehicle is close to its GVM before choosing.

How much lift does a touring 4WD need?

Less than most people expect. Lift is a by-product of choosing the right spring rate for your load, not the goal in itself. A modest lift with correct spring rates and corrected geometry tours better than a tall lift on springs that do not suit the weight.

Will upgraded suspension make my 4WD ride harder?

Not if the springs are matched to the load the vehicle actually carries. Harsh rides usually come from springs that are too heavy for the vehicle's real weight, or from damping that does not match the springs.

Do you correct the geometry after lifting a 4WD?

Yes, where the lift requires it. Lifting an independent front end changes caster and camber, and on live-axle vehicles it changes panhard and driveline angles. Correcting those is part of the job, and every kit includes a wheel alignment.

Which 4WD suspension brands do you fit?

We install Bilstein, Dobinsons, Tough Dog, FOX, BDS, Direction Plus, HPD, Method Wheels, Outback Kitters and Manta. Which one suits your vehicle depends on the platform, your load and how you drive — we recommend per vehicle rather than pushing one brand for everything.
