Home/GVM Upgrades Perth
If your loaded 4WD is at or over its plated weight, a GVM upgrade raises the legal limit with an engineered suspension package. Here is how it actually works, what paperwork you get, and when you need one.
GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) is the maximum your vehicle is legally permitted to weigh, fully loaded, including the vehicle itself, fuel, accessories, passengers, everything in it, and the download from your towball. It is set by the manufacturer and shown on the compliance plate.
A GVM upgrade is an engineered package — typically springs and dampers, sometimes additional components — that has been approved to raise that limit. It is not simply fitting heavier springs. Without the approval and the paperwork, heavier springs make the vehicle carry weight more comfortably while remaining illegally overloaded.
A GVM upgrade does not automatically raise your GCM. GCM (Gross Combination Mass) is the limit for the vehicle and trailer together. Raising GVM without raising GCM can mean that carrying more in the vehicle reduces what you may legally tow. If you tow, both numbers need to be looked at together.
| Pre-registration | Post-registration | |
|---|---|---|
| When it happens | Before the vehicle is first registered | On a vehicle already registered |
| How it is approved | Under a second-stage manufacture approval held by the kit manufacturer | By certification for that individual vehicle |
| Typical outcome | Generally the higher available GVM figures, and recognised consistently across states | Available figures can be lower, and requirements can differ between states |
| Paperwork | Modification/compliance documentation from the approval holder | An engineering certificate for your vehicle |
Which route applies to you depends on whether the vehicle is already registered, the make and model, and which approved packages exist for it. Requirements and available figures also differ by vehicle and by state, so this is a per-vehicle conversation rather than a fixed answer.
Certification is not something a workshop issues to itself. Depending on the route:
You should end up holding documentation that states your new GVM, and you will need to advise your insurer and follow the licensing requirements that apply to your vehicle. We will tell you which route applies to your vehicle, what documentation you will receive and who issues it, before you commit to the job.
The honest first step is a weighbridge ticket. Knowing the vehicle's real loaded weight and axle weights turns this from guesswork into a decision — and occasionally shows that a load-management change is enough and no upgrade is needed.
Questions
Yes, when they are done through an approved route and properly documented — either a pre-registration second-stage manufacture approval, or post-registration certification for your individual vehicle. What is available and what is required varies by vehicle and by state, so we confirm which route applies to yours before starting.
When its real loaded weight is at or over the plated GVM. That is common on touring 4WDs once a canopy, drawers, bar work, water, batteries and towball weight are added. A weighbridge ticket for the loaded vehicle is the way to know rather than guess.
Not by itself. Towing capacity is governed by GCM as well as GVM, and a GVM upgrade does not automatically raise GCM. If you tow, both numbers need to be considered together — sometimes carrying more in the vehicle reduces what you may legally tow.
Documentation stating your vehicle's new GVM — either modification and compliance documentation via the approval holder for a pre-registration upgrade, or an engineering certificate for a post-registration upgrade. You will also need to notify your insurer.
Only when it is done through an approved package and route for that specific vehicle, and documented. Fitting heavier springs without approval does not raise your legal GVM — the vehicle just carries the weight more comfortably while still being overloaded. We will tell you what applies to your vehicle rather than assuming.
