Brake fluid is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture out of the air over time. Moisture lowers the fluid's boiling point, and fluid that boils turns to vapour, which compresses. That is what a long, soft pedal on a mountain descent or a heavy tow actually is — and it arrives exactly when you need the brakes most.
Fluid condition gets checked at every service here, and flushing it on the manufacturer's recommended interval is one of the cheapest pieces of safety maintenance on a vehicle. It is routinely skipped because nobody notices it until the day it matters.
If you tow a van or boat, or run a permanently loaded ute, your brakes are working considerably harder than the design case. Heat is the enemy — more mass, more speed to dissipate, and often long descents where the system never gets a chance to cool.
For those vehicles we look at pad compound suitability, rotor condition and thickness, fluid condition, and whether the vehicle's rear brake balance is being affected by how it sits under load. A rear end squatting badly under towball weight changes the weight distribution the brakes were designed around — which is one of several reasons levelling a loaded vehicle is a safety improvement, not just a comfort one.
Every brake job gets quoted in writing after inspection, with the rotor measurements and pad condition explained so you can see why the recommendation is what it is.

Squealing is the usual first sign; grinding means they are past the limit and the rotor is likely being damaged too. A pedal that feels different, or a vehicle that pulls under braking, also warrant an inspection. Pad thickness is measured properly on the hoist rather than guessed.
Not necessarily. If the rotors are above their minimum thickness and are not badly scored or warped, they can often be machined or reused. We measure them and show you the numbers rather than replacing as a default.
Follow your manufacturer's interval, commonly expressed in years rather than kilometres, because fluid absorbs moisture over time regardless of use. Moisture lowers the boiling point, which is what causes a soft pedal under heavy or sustained braking.
